A 2026 Dig at Shiloh Confirmed the Gate Where Eli the Priest Died

New excavation results place a real, bent-axis gate exactly where 1 Samuel 4 says an old priest fell dead, though not every archaeologist agrees on what it proves.

On September 14, 2026, a headline went out that most people scrolled past without a second look: archaeologists had turned up new clues connected to the Ark of the Covenant. It isn't old news dressed up to look fresh. Associates for Biblical Research wrapped its eighth excavation season at Tel Shiloh in Israel this year, and three of the season's finds line up with a specific, violent scene from 1 Samuel 4.

The team, led by Dr. Scott Stripling, has worked the site since 2017. This year's results are the most direct yet.

What Did Archaeologists Find at Shiloh This Year?

Three findings came out of the 2026 season. First, excavators uncovered the southern wall of a large building whose orientation and proportions match the tabernacle's measurements as described in Exodus 26 and 27, a two-to-one ratio that lets researchers reconstruct the structure's full footprint for the first time. Second, new walls turned up in the northern gate complex, confirming a bent-axis gate: an entrance passage that doglegs through a series of connected rooms rather than running straight through the wall, a design common to fortified Iron Age cities and exactly the structure someone would need to sit and watch a road for hours. Third, beneath the newer layers, the team found three Middle Bronze Age storage jars still holding charred olives and wheat, older than the story below but proof the ground keeps giving up what's buried in it.

Altar horns, ceramic pomegranates, and murex shell, the source of the blue dye used in priestly garments, have also come out of ABR's recent digs at the site, not this season alone. Why Does a Gate Matter for the Story of Eli the Priest?

Shiloh housed the tabernacle, and the Ark of the Covenant inside it, for more than three hundred years before either ever reached Jerusalem. That's where 1 Samuel 4 opens: Israel goes to battle against the Philistines, loses badly, and someone makes the desperate call to carry the Ark itself onto the battlefield. Israel loses anyway. The Ark is captured. Eli's two sons die in the fighting.

Back in Shiloh, Eli, old and blind by this point, waits by the gate for word.

And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.1 Samuel 4:13 (KJV)

When the runner reaches him and says the Ark is gone, Eli falls backward off his seat and breaks his neck.

And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.1 Samuel 4:18 (KJV)

That detail, a seat by the gate where a man sits for hours watching the road, is a strange thing for a text written thousands of years ago to get right by accident. A bent-axis gate with side rooms is precisely the kind of structure that gives someone a place to sit.

Has the Ark of the Covenant Been Found?

No. Even ABR isn't claiming that. Stripling's team says the building's shape, size, and orientation line up with what Exodus describes for the tabernacle, and that the gate design matches what 1 Samuel implies about Shiloh's layout. Nothing pulled from the ground so far points directly to the Ark itself, and no credible researcher is saying otherwise.

Not every archaeologist agrees on what these finds prove. Aren Maeir, who directs a separate excavation at Tell es-Safi/Gath and teaches at Bar-Ilan University, has pushed back publicly on the sensational framing some outlets used, arguing on his own site that the finds show cultic activity across several periods, not a confirmed tabernacle or ark, and pointing out that the biblical text itself has the Philistines carrying the Ark away from Shiloh, so it was never going to turn up there in the first place.

Both are true at once. The building and gate are real, dated, and closer to the story's setting than skeptics expected. Whether that adds up to "the tabernacle" is still an open argument, and the team plans to keep digging.
