Does God Forgive All Sins?

Scripture says yes, with one sobering exception worth understanding.

Somebody reading this right now is carrying a specific memory they think disqualifies them. Maybe it is an affair, an addiction, a decision that ended a life, words said to a parent who died before an apology could happen. The question is not abstract for them. It is the difference between sleeping at night and staring at the ceiling.

Here is the answer straight, no hedging: God forgives all sins. Every one. 1 John 1:9 does not say he forgives most sins, or the small ones, or the ones that were not your fault. It says he is faithful and just to forgive whoever confesses. That word faithful matters. God is not moody about this. He has bound himself by his own character to forgive the repentant.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9 (KJV)

What Does It Actually Take to Be Forgiven?

Confession and repentance, not perfection. Confession means agreeing with God that the thing was wrong, not managing him or minimizing it. Repentance means turning, actually walking a different direction, not just feeling bad for getting caught. The debt gets cancelled the moment a person brings it to him honestly, and it does not get reopened later because the guilt resurfaces. Romans 8:1 puts it plainly: there is no condemnation left for those who belong to Christ.

Is There Really a Sin God Will Not Forgive?

Yes, one, and it is almost certainly not what is keeping you up at night. Jesus named it directly in Matthew 12:31 to a group of religious leaders who had just watched him cast out a demon and, rather than admit they were seeing God at work, called it the devil's power instead. That is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit: not a slip of the tongue, not a moment of doubt, but a settled, ongoing refusal to accept the Spirit's testimony about who Jesus is. Bible teachers across denominations agree on the reason it cannot be forgiven. It is not that God's mercy runs dry. It is that the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts a person and leads them to repent in the first place, and someone who has permanently silenced that voice in themselves has cut off the very channel forgiveness travels through. If you are anxious that you might have committed it, that anxiety is itself strong evidence you have not. A hardened heart does not worry about its condition, and a person permanently past caring is the only one Scripture actually warns is in real danger here.

Why Doesn't Guilt Just Go Away After I'm Forgiven?

Because forgiveness is a legal and relational reality, but guilt feelings are an emotional habit, and habits take longer to catch up to truth. This trips up a lot of sincere believers. They confess something, mean it, and then the shame shows back up a week later like nothing happened. Isaiah 43:25 says God blots out our transgressions for his own sake and will not remember our sins. He is not pretending. He has chosen, as an act of his will, not to hold it against you anymore. Feeling forgiven and being forgiven are two different things, and Scripture consistently asks believers to stand on the second one even when the first has not arrived yet.

What Does This Mean for How I Treat Other People?

It means the forgiveness flowing into your life is meant to flow back out, not stop with you. Jesus was blunt about this connection. A few practical markers of what receiving forgiveness is supposed to produce:

• A willingness to forgive people who have genuinely wronged you, even before they apologize
• Less time spent keeping a mental ledger of who owes you what
• Honesty with God about specific sins instead of vague, generic prayers
• Gratitude that shows up as changed behavior, not just relief

Jesus's point was not subtle. The servant's fatal mistake was forgetting the size of what he had been let off the hook for. Anyone who has really understood how much they were forgiven finds it strange to stay bitter at someone else's small debt.

What If I Keep Making the Same Mistake?

Repeated sin does not shrink God's willingness to forgive, but it should push you to ask why the pattern keeps winning. 1 John 1:9 is written for ongoing use, not a one-time transaction, which is why believers are taught to confess as a daily practice, not a single altar-call moment. Starting each morning in a short passage like our daily verse is one simple way to keep that habit alive instead of letting it slip. That said, a habit that never gets confronted is worth taking seriously. Struggling and repenting again is not the same thing as a hardened heart that has stopped caring. If you keep coming back to God with it, that itself is a sign the Spirit is still working in you. Whatever the memory is that started you reading this, bring it to him tonight. He is not waiting to see if you deserve it. He is waiting for you to ask.
