Donnie Wahlberg Says Fame Left Him Empty. Then He Got Baptized.

The New Kids on the Block singer says a career and family that looked perfect from the outside were hiding a man who felt hollow, until he surrendered to Jesus this year.

Donnie Wahlberg has spent almost forty years famous. New Kids on the Block sold out arenas before he was old enough to legally drink, Blue Bloods ran on network television for more than a decade, and by any outside measure his life reads like a success story with no rough edges. He says that was exactly the problem.

On August 17, his 57th birthday, Wahlberg posted a video set to a worship song, stitched together from highlights of the past year. Buried in the footage, almost as an afterthought, was something bigger than any of it: he and his wife, actress Jenny McCarthy, had been baptized.

Everything Looked Perfect, and He Was Empty

Wahlberg first talked about the shift in April, on The George Janko Show. He described a moment where the life he had built stopped being enough to hold him together. "I can't do it anymore without Him," he said. "I'm missing something in my life." Then he named the gap between how his life looked and how it actually felt: "Everything to the outside, to everyone, looks perfect and I was empty."

That kind of admission is rare from someone at his level of fame. According to Christian Post, Wahlberg has since called committing his life to Jesus his greatest accomplishment, ahead of three decades of platinum records and a long-running hit television career.

A Birthday Video With the Baptism Folded In

The baptism happened at Shepherd Church, a nondenominational congregation in Porter Ranch, California, under Pastor Dudley Rutherford. Wahlberg did not hold a press conference about it. He folded it into a birthday reel, the way someone mentions a big life change almost in passing because they are still getting used to saying it out loud.

His caption did the rest of the talking. "Looking back over the past year of my life, the Lord has been renewing my mind, rebuilding my spirit, rearranging my priorities, recentering my focus, recharging my energy, reshaping my heart, refining my faith, restoring my joy and redeeming my life," he wrote, closing with a line that has since been quoted from RELEVANT to Crosswalk: "I don't know where I would be without Jesus, but I know where I will be with Him. All the glory is His."

Jenny McCarthy's Own Surrender

McCarthy's path ran alongside his. The former co-host of The View has talked in recent months about her own turn toward faith, describing her posture toward Jesus in blunt, characteristically unfiltered terms. She has also credited that faith with helping her process grief after Charlie Kirk's murder last year, a season she says pushed her toward Scripture rather than away from it.

Neither Wahlberg nor McCarthy has framed the baptism as a finished project. His language leans forward, not backward, describing a year of being rebuilt rather than a single tidy moment of arrival.

That is the claim underneath every public baptism story like this one. Not that fame or family or a good career are worthless, Wahlberg had all three, but that none of it can do what it was never built to do. A new creature is not a polished version of the old one. It is a different starting point entirely, and Scripture never promised that starting point would look impressive from the outside before someone actually chose it.

An Old Story About Being Seen When You Feel Invisible

Wahlberg's word for it, empty, is not a new complaint. Genesis tells a version of it that predates fame entirely. Hagar was an Egyptian servant handed off, used, and then cast into the wilderness twice with nothing, once while pregnant and alone, once with a dying child and an empty water jar. She had no career anyone envied and no birthday video anyone would watch. She had less than nothing. And in that wilderness she became the only person in the Bible to give God a name. She called Him El Roi, the God who sees me, because He found her in the exact place she assumed no one, not even Heaven, was looking. It is an unusual arc, but not a new one. People with far less to lose have surrendered far less publicly and found the same thing he is describing: that a full life and an empty one can look identical from the outside, and only one of them can be fixed by an accomplishment.
