He Went Quietly When They Arrested Him. Days Later They Found His Body on a Road.
A pastor in Sudan's Nuba Mountains cooperated fully when armed men came for him at his church. A separate attack the same day left ten dead and twenty taken hostage, including children.
Reverend Adil Idris Jangoul did not resist. On July 23, fighters from the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North came to his residence at the Sudanese Episcopal Church in Heban, a town in Sudan's Nuba Mountains, and took him into custody. According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide's reporting, he complied without a fight and his money was seized on the spot. There was no reason, at that moment, to think it would end the way it did.
His body was found days later on a roadside outside town, alongside six other men from the Otoro ethnic community. All seven had been executed without trial, without charges, without any process at all. Jangoul had spent his ministry in a region that prided itself on holding different tribes and faiths together. He became one more name on a growing list of pastors and priests who did not survive the year.
The Same Day, a Second Attack
Heban was not finished absorbing violence that day. Members of the Otoro ethnic group carried out a separate assault on the town, killing at least ten people and taking more than twenty hostages, children among them. One of those seized was Reverend Yakoub Ibrahim Tia, a former general secretary of the Sudanese Church of Christ. International Christian Concern notes that church ministers from multiple ethnic backgrounds spent the following days negotiating for the hostages, and on July 28 every one of them walked free.
That release is the one piece of this story that ended the way people prayed it would. It does not undo what happened to Jangoul, and it does not erase the reason church leaders had to do that negotiating in the first place: a region once known for tribes and faiths coexisting is now a place where a pastor can be led away calmly and never come home.
A Civil War That Keeps Finding Churches
Sudan has been at war since April 2023, and the toll on Christian communities keeps climbing in the shadows of a conflict most Western headlines have moved past. International Christian Concern counts at least 165 churches forced to close since the fighting began, buildings destroyed, looted, or seized outright and turned into military positions.
