Myanmar's Military Shot a Pastor Who Served One Church for 22 Years
Rev. Dal Thawn Tuang was returning from church work in a neighboring village when soldiers shot him. He is the second Chin State pastor reported killed since June.
Rev. Dal Thawn Tuang was heading back to his village on Monday afternoon. He had spent the day on church work in a neighboring community, and the road home ran past the Kapte bridge in Chin State, Myanmar. At about 4 p.m. on September 14, the military shot him three times.
What Happened Near the Kapte Bridge
The bullets hit his chest, abdomen, and thigh, according to International Christian Concern. The Burma Research Institute, a watchdog group that documents abuses against Christians in Burma, confirmed his death and identified him as assistant pastor of Lamzang Baptist Church. He had served that congregation for 22 years. He leaves a wife and two children. His funeral was held September 16 in Lamzang, two days after the shooting.
The Second Pastor Since June
Tuang's killing follows another. Rev. William, senior pastor of Chungcung Baptist Church for more than 25 years, was killed on June 4 along with a fellow believer named Nam Ceu. Worthy News reported that soldiers from the 77th Light Infantry Division detained the two men on May 16 at a farm shelter about a mile from the village. Three others got away. William stayed, apparently believing his pastoral identification would protect him. Church members later concluded both men had been killed after their attempts to get answers from military authorities went nowhere.
William was accused of supporting the Hakha Chinland Defense Force, a local armed group that opposes the military. The Burma Research Institute's board chairman, Rev. Robin Stoops, called the killing "an extrajudicial killing" carried out without a trial. William left a wife and five children. His church held a memorial service on August 26.

What the Toll Looks Like So Far
ICC's report puts the damage since the 2021 coup at more than 340 churches damaged or destroyed. It lists 149 Christians killed and 218 imprisoned between 2022 and 2025. ICC president Shawn Wright called the recent pastor killings "certainly a concerning trend" and asked Western Christians to pray for the families and the Burmese church.
The Burma Research Institute wants more than prayer from Washington. Its president, Zo Tum Hmung, is urging the Trump administration to act to protect persecuted Christians in Burma, and the group issued its call the same day ICC published its report.
Two men who each spent more than two decades pastoring one church are now buried in the same state, a few months apart. Pray for Rev. William's wife and five children, and for Rev. Tuang's wife and two children. Pray for the believers in Lamzang and Chungcung, who have to find the next shepherd while they are still burying the last one.
