Six Christians Killed in a Single Weekend in Nigeria's Plateau State

Armed attackers hit Christian villages in Riyom and Bokkos on October 3 and 4, and a third raid began on October 6. Here is what residents report, and what the numbers say about Nigeria.

Joel Bwede was 39. Justice Dadong was 22. Both men were killed on the night of Saturday, October 3, in Wereng, a Christian village in Riyom County, Plateau State, Nigeria.

They were two of six Christians killed across two counties in a single weekend, according to Morning Star News, which collected the accounts from residents and local leaders. A third attack was still under way on Tuesday night.

What residents say happened

On Saturday, October 3, armed Fulani attackers entered Rim village in Riyom County and killed two Christians, resident Bulus Davou told Morning Star. The same night, they struck Wereng and killed Bwede and Dadong.

On Sunday, October 4, the violence moved to Bokkos County. Youth leader Bwefang Sunday said two Christians died and three were wounded in Mangor village. A late attack on nearby Bakanuk left Mangai Godfrey injured. He was receiving treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital.

Then came Tuesday, October 6. Around 9 p.m., while families slept in Jol village in Riyom, community leader Solomon Mwantiri sent a text message: "A terror attack is currently ongoing in Jol community." The report gives no death toll for that raid.

Morning Star is a Christian news service and relies on local witnesses, so these figures come from the villages themselves. Police statements were not part of its report.

This was not a one-week spike

Residents told Morning Star that three Christians were killed in Rim on August 25 and three more on August 30. In mid-September, The Guardian Nigeria reported 13 people killed in separate attacks across Jos South, Mangu and Riyom. Nine of them were passengers traveling to Jos, shot on the road. Police confirmed attacks had happened but said they were still gathering information.

Plateau sits in Nigeria's Middle Belt, where Christian farming communities and armed herders have clashed for years. Local lawmaker Darim Ezekiel responded to this month's killings by calling for immediate military action against the attackers. Christian leaders quoted by Morning Star say the goal is land. Land disputes and religion are tangled together here, and the victims are named, buried and mourned by their churches either way.

What the national numbers show

Open Doors' 2026 World Watch List ranks Nigeria seventh among the 50 hardest countries to follow Jesus. It counts 4,849 Christians killed for their faith worldwide in the reporting year ending September 30, 2025. Morning Star, citing the same list, puts Nigeria's share at 3,490, nearly three out of four.

Those are not abstractions. They are men like Bwede, in his thirties, and Dadong, barely out of his twenties.

Jesus told his followers to expect this kind of road.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 5:10 (KJV)

He did not promise ease. He promised the kingdom, and he promised to stay close. Our own video on why God allows suffering walks through the hardest version of that question, the one a family in Rim asks while standing at a grave. It does not offer a neat answer. It shows what Scripture says God does with pain, and who he is while it happens.
