About This Short

A thousand years before Babylon, this city already existed. Abraham was born here. Iraq's government confirmed in late 2025 that it is finalizing an agreement with the Vatican to open Christian pilgrimage to Ur. A new church named for Abraham has already opened at the site.

Ur's Great Ziggurat was built around 2100 BC for Nanna, the Sumerian moon god, its summit shrine faced in rare blue glazed brick. According to Genesis 11:31, Abraham's father Terah led the family out of Ur of the Chaldees toward Canaan. In the 1920s, archaeologist Leonard Woolley uncovered royal tombs here untouched for over 4,000 years, including a queen buried with a gold headdress and a lyre crowned by a gold and lapis lazuli bull's head.
