This was the thick, elaborately woven curtain that separated the holy place from the most holy place, the inner sanctuary where God's presence dwelt.

This curtain was enormous, standing as tall as a six-story building and as wide as three buildings placed side by side. It was woven with 72 plats of 24 threads each, making it incredibly thick and strong. Under normal circumstances, it would have been virtually impossible to tear such a massive, heavy curtain. But more importantly, this curtain served a crucial spiritual purpose. It marked the boundary that separated sinful humanity from the holy presence of God.

Only the high priest could pass beyond this curtain, and only once a year on the day of atonement when he would offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people. The presence of this curtain declared to everyone that sin creates a barrier between God and humanity. It proclaimed that sinful people cannot simply approach a holy God without proper sacrifice and mediation. For over a thousand years, this curtain had stood as a constant reminder of humanity's separation from their creator.

But now, at the exact moment Jesus died, this massive curtain was supernaturally torn from top to bottom. The direction of the tear is significant because it indicates that this was not done by human hands, showing that it was God himself who ripped the curtain in two. No longer would people need to approach God through priests and animal sacrifices. No longer would access to God be limited to one person, one day a year.

The perfect sacrifice had been made, and now anyone could come boldly into the throne room of grace through Jesus Christ. This torn curtain proclaimed the end of the old covenant system and the beginning of a new covenant written in the blood of God's own son. It announced that the age of separation was over and the age of reconciliation had begun. The third supernatural sign that accompanied Jesus' death was an earthquake that shook the very foundations of the earth.

While earthquakes are not uncommon in the Middle East, the timing of this particular earthquake was clearly supernatural. This wasn't just any geological event. This earthquake occurred at the precise moment the Son of God died, serving as creation's own testimony to the cosmic significance of what had just taken place. Throughout scripture, earthquakes often accompany significant divine revelations or mighty acts of God.

When God descended upon Mount Si to give his law to Moses, the entire mountain shook violently. The earthquake at Calvary connected directly to that earlier earthquake at Sinai, signifying that the demands of the law given at Si had now been perfectly fulfilled through the death of Christ. And it's this final sign that reveals the ultimate victory that was won through Jesus' death. The fourth and most extraordinary event that occurred at the moment of Jesus' death in Matthew 27:52-53. He records that the tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints who had died were raised to life and walked through the streets of Jerusalem. The earthquake that had just shaken the earth didn't just crack rocks and split the ground.

It opened ancient tombs. And in that moment, death itself was defeated. Saints who had been sleeping in death suddenly awakened to life again. These weren't just any people who were raised. They were divine declarations, heavenly announcements that something unprecedented had just taken place. The darkness proclaimed that divine judgment had been satisfied. The torn curtain announced that the way to God was now open.
